چکیده

Forty-five specimens were obtained by sequential translaryngeal aspiration and fiberoptic bronchoscopy from 31 clinically uninfected patients with lung cancer in order to evaluate the reliability of routine fiberoptic bronehoscopy for culture of the tower respiratory tract. Bacteria were recovered from 98 percent (44) of the specimens obtained ‘via fiberoptic bronchoscopy and from 58 percent (26) of the specimens obtained by the preceding translaryngeal aspiration. The microorganisms grown from cultures of specimens obtained by fiberoptic bronchoscopy consisted of mixtures of both nonpathogenic

[Problems of bacteriological diagnosis of lower respiratory infections using fiberbronchoscopic aspiration of secretions].

Different results have been observed in systematically analysing bacteriological cultures of (a) bronchial secretions aspirated during fiberoptic bronchoscopy and (b) of sputum. In a prospective study of 23 patients with chronic infections of the lower respiratory tract, bacteriological cultures of the sputum showed more bronchopathogenic strains than those of subsequently removed bronchial sec...

Diagnosis of bacterial pulmonary infections with quantitative protected catheter cultures obtained during bronchoscopy.

Quantitative bacteriology was performed on specimens collected by protected catheter fiberoptic bronchoscopy from 172 patients. Of the patients who had pneumonia, 75 of 78 (96%) had one or more species present at greater than or equal to 10(3) CFU/ml, whereas 2 of 35 (6%) control patients had organisms present in that quantity. In addition, 66% of the control specimens yielded no isolates by th...

Identification of new bacterial and fungal pathogens on surveillance bronchoscopy prior to sinus surgery in patients with cystic fibrosis.

BACKGROUND Flexible fiberoptic bronchoscopy was performed prior to functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) while under general anesthesia to collect bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) for lower respiratory tract cultures in patients with cystic fibrosis (CF). METHODS A retrospective chart review was performed on all CF patients who underwent combined FESS and bronchoscopy between January ...

Evaluation of oxygen requirement in patients during fiberoptic bronchoscopy

Background: Sometimes oxygen is given to patients during fiberoptic bronchoscopy to prevent arterial hypoxemia, but oxygen usually is given to patients with SPO2 less than 90%. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the patient's oxygen requirement according to SPO2 and its relationship with Pulmonary Function Test (PFT). Methods: From January 2006 to April 2007, 146 patients who needed fibe...
